Navigating the Deep & Chilly Waters of Sin Killing with John Owen

October 31, 2015

Hello Friends!

After three months hearing from Jeremiah Burroughs on the Art of Christian Contentment, it is again time to shift gears and take on a new challenge. The new series for the Mound Evangelical Free Church blog will feature daily excerpts from John Owen's, "Temptation And Sin." I don't know about you but taking on the writings of John Owen is something I have been putting off far too long. I am well aware of the challenges ahead in tackling a work from such a great mind but could also not be more excited at the opportunity to possess (by the power of the Holy Spirit) life-long truths that will empower us to make eye-gouging war with our sin, especially those sins that entangle us most and have the deepest roots planted in our hearts.

I know of no one who needs these truths more than myself. As human beings, we will make decisions that bring us the greatest joy. It is my sincere prayer that with God's help, He will reveal to us the superiority of Jesus Christ compared to any sin we might be struggling with. You fill in the blank. It is also my hope that any victories over sin are not simply self willed, but rather the shackles keeping us in bondage are broken free by the Holy Spirit giving us eyes to see that choosing Christ over our sin will without question, bring us greater joy. Oh Lord, help us to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord (Phil 3:8). Whether it be the love of money, sports, video games, television, lust, people-pleasing, overworking, laziness, etc., let's roll up our sleeves and uncover the precious truths and the reality that Jesus is a thousand times better than ALL of these and so much more.

For His Glory and Our Joy,

Matt Hendrickson
