The Gospel According to Psalm 130 - Reflections From the Pen of John Owen

January 1, 2015

Dear Mound Evangelical Free Church,

Greetings friends, and Happy New Year!  I'm praying that this first day of 2015 finds you well and in the grip of Christ's grace.  Over the last two years, I've experimented with blogging on this website in an effort to encourage you in your walk with the Savior.  This year, I aim to do that in a fresh way with the help of an old friend.  As many of you know, John Owen (the 17th century British Puritan) has been a daily companion of mine for many years.  His reflections on the gospel and its practical application to everyday life have been a source of incaluable joy and strength to me as I seek to follow Jesus.  Over this next season, I'd like to share some of the gold with you that I've had the pleasure to mine.

Beginning today, I will begin posting excerpts from John Owen's An Exposition of Psalm 130.  Written in 1668, this book is a 325 page walk through 8 verses of Scripture (Psalm 130).  Though that may sound intimidating, my hope is to make Owen's thoughts as accessible as possible.  Each post will be "Twitter-length" (roughly 160 characters) with a title that introduces the day's topic.  Though Owen wrote in English, we will (from time to time) encounter language that might need a little 21st century translating.  Such words will be flagged and more modern vocabulary provided.

This blog post series is titled: "The Gospel According to Psalm 130: Reflections From the Pen of John Owen".  At its heart, Psalm 130 is pure gospel.  Owen knows this and dwells long and lovingly over its message.  My hope is that these daily posts will stir your heart with fresh passion for Christ and a growing desire to celebrate, demonstrate and communicate his gospel.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Dave
