Luke 19-20

Father in Heaven,

The story of Jesus and Zacchaeus is the account of a miracle.  Every bit the supernatural event as your healings, exorcisms, your stilling of the storm...Sovereign Christ, in Zacchaeus - you raised a man from spiritual death to life.  Stunned by your gaze, your call, and your friendship, a lost man is found.  It shouldn't surprise us, on one level, Lord.  What you did with Zacchaeus is programmatic of your entire ministry.  Perhaps one of the most succinct summaries of your mission is stated in Luke 19:10.  The crescendo to your day with the sinner turned saint - "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."  That's what you did in the case of old Zaccaeus, Lord.  You sought him and saved him.  O Lord Jesus...please, please, please do it again!

Son of Man, we at Mound Evangelical Free Church believe that you are still in the soul saving business.  It's why you came.  Nevertheless, we confess that it's a rare occurance in our midst these days.  But we're hungry, Lord.  You came to seek and to save the lost.  So grant us a heart desire and prayer unto God that unbelievers in our midst be saved (Romans 10:1).  Holy Spirit, convict family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and classmates of their sin (John 16:8).  Father, draw them to your Son (John 6:44, 65).  Open doors for us to speak the everlasting gospel to them (Colossians 4:3).  Grant that we would take a profound interest in them - these dear people fearfully and wonderfully made in your very image (Psalm 8:5-8; 139:13-14).  Give us courage, clarity, gentleness, respect, wisdom, graciousness, and boldness in our speech (Romans 1:16; Colossians 4:4; 1 Peter 3:15; Ephesians 6:18-19).  Help us to redeem the time, planting and watering the seed of the word of God wherever you may lead - and then the faith to trust you for the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6).  Please help us, Lord.  We want to spend and be spent for you.  May we live for the very reason you gave yours - "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost".

In Jesus' Name,

"The...reason why God used D.L. Moody was because of his consuming passion for the salvation of the lost.  Mr. Moody made the resolution, shortly after he himself was saved, that he would never let twenty-four hours pass over his head without speaking to at least one person about his soul.  His was a very busy life, and sometimes he would forget his resolution until the last hour, and sometimes he would get out of bed, dress, go out and talk to someone about his soul in order that he might not let one day pass without having definitely told at least one of his fellow-mortals about his need and the Savior who could meet it."
