Luke 1

Father in Heaven,

Our church's mission is to be and make disciples of Jesus Christ - a quest that will be immeasurably weakened to the degree that we lack conviction regarding who he is and what he teaches.  How we praise you for the stated purpose of the Gospel Jesus Christ According to Luke: "that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.(Luke 1:4)"  It's interesting, Lord, that in the New Testament - "certainty" is simply a synonym for "faith".  So we read in Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."  Certainty...assurance...conviction, in a word...faith.

Almighty God, grant your people of Mound Evangelical Free Church such faith in Jesus.  Steady, rock solid, time-tested, Spirit-wrought faith.  We believe...help our unbelief.  O that we might be inclined to doubt our doubts and grow in greater and greater esteem for your trustworthy word.  Lord Jesus, the origins of such faith is not a mystery.  It is the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives as the banquet table of your promises in the gospel is spread before us in the Scriptures.  Faith comes from hearing - and hearing through the word of Christ (Galatians 3:5; Romans 10:17).  May our faith soar this season as we read though the Gospel of Luke - that we may have certainty concerning the things we have been taught.

In Jesus' Name,

Amen

"...what we suffer from to-day is humility in the wrong place.  Modesty has moved from the organ of ambition.  Modesty has settled upon the organ of conviction; where it was never meant to be.  A man was meant to be doubtful about himself, but undoubting about the truth; this has been exactly reversed...We are on the road to producing a race of men too mentally modest to believe in the multiplication table."
